Match SummaryORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's and women's tennis teams took the courts for their first outdoor matches of the season Saturday afternoon—and the results were mixed.
The Cardinal women, behind two wins from
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.), picked up their fourth win in five matches this year with a 7-2 win over Webber International, while the Saint Mary's men came up short in falling to the Warriors 6-3.
"It was good to get that first match outdoor under our belts," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "(Webber) was a little short-handed on the women's side, but the ladies that did play put together a great effort—it was a good win.
"The guys played OK for their first match outside, but give credit to Webber, they were a very good team."
Sonday and
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) picked up straight-set singles wins for the Cardinals—Sonday winning 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1, while Syed was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No., 4. Sonday also teamed with
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, with
Haley Jorgensen (De Pere, Wis.) and Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) adding an 8-1 win at No. 2. The Cardinals also took advantage of forfeit wins at Nos. 5-6 singles and No. 3 doubles to complete the 7-2 win.
The Cardinal men fell behind 2-1 after the doubles competition, with Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S..D.) and Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.) collecting an 8-3 win at No. 3. Warren Lawrenz (Rochester, Minn.) and Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) picked up Saint Mary's two singles victories, winning in straight sets at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.
Both teams are back in action with a pair of matches on Sunday—the Cardinal women (4-1 overall) square off against Otterbein and Adrian, while the Saint Mary's men (5-4 overall) face Ohio Northern and Adrian.
