Photo GalleryWINONA, Minn. — It's been a long time since the Saint Mary's University and Winona State women's tennis teams had squared off against each other.
Despite the fact that the two teams call the same club home, the Cardinals and Warriors had not faced off since Feb, 3, 2012.
And after Friday's end result, the Warriors might want to wait another four years to take on the Cardinals.
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the nonconference match and collected three straight-set singles wins to ice the 5-4 victory at the Winona Tennis Center.
"This was a huge victory for the ladies," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We knew going in that it was going to be a tight match, but they really came through."
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) and
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.) recorded an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles and
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) and Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) added an 8-3 victory at No. 3 to give the Cardinals the early lead.
Vandenberg, Boeve, and Jorgensen then sealed the Cardinals' win with straight-set wins at No. 3, 4, and 5 singles.
The Cardinals (6-2 overall) are back in action on Saturday, hosting St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Winona Tennis Center. Match time is set for noon.
