MENOMONIE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team closed out the nonconference portion of its schedule in impressive fashion Thursday afternoon.
Playing in their first outdoor match since late February, the Cardinals dominated their match against UW-Stout, rolling to a 9-0 victory.
"We played really well, especially considering it was our first outdoor match since our spring trip to Orlando," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "This was good preparation for Saturday's match."
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the three doubles matches, sandwiching 8-4 wins by
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.)/
Kirsten Hoffmann (Apple Valley, Minn.) and
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.)/
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.) around an 8-1 by
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.)/
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.).
And the Cardinals rode that early momentum to straight-set singles wins by Sonday, Hoffmann, Vandenberg, Boeve, Jorgensen, and
Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.) en route to their fifth 9-0 sweep of the season.
The Cardinals (11-7 overall) close out their regular-season schedule this weekend, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for a noon conference showdown against Hamline, before honoring their graduating seniors on Senior Day Sunday with a noon MIAC match against Macalester at the Winona Tennis Center.
