BECKER, Minn. — Saint Mary's University of Minnesota golf coach
Greg Moore also serves as the Cardinal women's hockey team's assistant coach—and during Saturday afternoon's opening round of the Augsburg Invitational, the conditions were much more suited to a Cardinal hockey game than the first spring golf outing of the season.
The Cardinal men collected rounds of 82 and 83 from Brett Jackson and Kyle Brodt, respectively, in recording a Day 1 score of 341 at Pebble Creek Golf Course, leaving Saint Mary's 11
th heading into Sunday's 18-hole final round.
The Saint Mary's women, meanwhile, also took part in the first day of the two-day Augsburg Invitational, getting a team-best 91 from
Kaitlin Kling en route to a 425 opening-round team score, putting the Cardinals sixth entering Sunday's final round at Les Bolstad Golf Course
"The wind was blowing hard, and it was cold—really cold," said Moore, whose teams will return to the Pebble Creek Golf Course (men) and Les Bolstad Golf Course (women) on Sunday for the final 18 holes of the 36-hole tournaments. "Mental mistakes and putting were not our strong suits today."
Hunter Rau followed Jackson and Brodt with an 86, while David Iten and Chad Cesarz rounded out the Saint Mary's top five with 90s.
Along with Kling's 91, the Cardinal women also got a 96 from
Madison Gately, a 116 from
Michaela Heuckendorf, a 122 from
Tiarra Thompson, and a 137 from
Erika Stumo.
