Cardinals suffer 8-1 MIAC setback to St. Olaf

Match Summary | GameDay Preview

OWATONNA, Minn. — St. Olaf entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team unbeaten in conference play.

And the Cardinals learned first-hand why.

St. Olaf (5-0 MIAC, 7-1 overall) raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play and added five, straight-set singles wins in handing Saint Mary's an 8-1 MIAC setback at the Owatonna Tennis Center.

"We played tough today," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "St. Olaf was just a little deeper, and that was the difference.

"If we can play the way we did today moving forward, we will finish (the season) well."

The Cardinals didn't make it easy for the Oles, dropping the three doubles matches 8-5, 9-7, and 8-3—but when it came to the singles portion, St. Olaf's depth was just too much.

Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) collected the Cardinals' lone victory, beating the Oles' Kellis Brandt 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.

The Cardinals (2-5 MIAC, 10-6 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, returning to the Winona Tennis Center for a 12:30 p.m. conference match against Gustavus.
