WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team was all business Friday afternoon, making quick work of North Central (Minn.) in the teams' nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
Really quick work.
The Cardinals put an end to their two-match losing streak in impressive fashion, dropping a total of just seven games in cruising to a 9-0 victory over the Rams.
"We played some really solid tennis—and everyone contributed," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "The ladies played extremely well, and earned a nice weekend off."
The Cardinals set the tone for the afternoon with three convincing doubles wins, as
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.)/
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) and
Summer Lardy (Richmond, Minn.)/
Paige Swanson (Oak Grove, Minn.) teamed for 8-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, while
Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.)/
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) added an 8-2 victory at No. 2.
And as good as the Cardinal doubles teams were, the were even more dominant in singles play, dropping just five games—including 6-0, 6-0 wins by
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.),
Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.), and
Emily Strezishar (East Grand Forks, N.D.).
The Cardinals (2-2 overall) are now off until next Friday, when they entertain Bethany Lutheran in a 4 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
