• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their four-match spring trip sitting at 5-2 overall — the lone blemishes, a 9-0 loss to conference power Gustavus in their MIAC-opener and an 8-1 setback to Saint Benedict lasts Saturday.

• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals split their conference/nonconference doubleheader last Saturday at the Winona Tennis Center, falling to Saint Benedict 8-1 in MIAC play, before rallying for a convincing 9-0 nonconference victory over Bethany Lutheran.

• NEAR-PERFECT: The Cardinals dropped just 11 games in its nonconference match against Bethany Lutheran last Saturday, posting 8-0 and 8-4 wins in doubles (plus a forfeit victory at No. 3), and adding a pair of 6-0, 6-0 sweeps by Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) and Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), while dropping just seven games in the other four singles contests.

• WINNING BIG: Three of SMU’s five wins have been 9-0 sweeps, while the other two victories have been by 8-1 counts.

• GOING THE DISTANCE: Four of the six singles matches in SMU’s 8-1 loss to Saint Benedict were stretched to a third set, including a 1-6, 6-1, 10-2 win by Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.,) at No. 1. The other two singles matches vs. the Blazers included a first-set tiebreaker.

• LEADING THE CHARGE: Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) heads into spring break leading the Cardinals with five dual-match singles wins, followed by Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.), Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.), and Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) with four apiece. … Renwick is riding a team-high three-match singles winning streak, while Peterson has won her last two contests.

• RACKING UP THE WINS: Becker closed out the 2021 season winning four of her last five matches to end the year with a team-high 11 singles wins, and now owns a 25-7 career singles record.

• SINGLED OUT: The Cardinals collected nine singles victories at last fall’s ITA Regional/Midwest Open, led by Henderson, Renwick, and Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.) with two each.

• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Buerman and Renwick picked up their first collegiate singles wins for the Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team at the 2021 ITA Regional/Midwest Open on Sept. 24-25. Buerman outlasted Northwestern’s Taylar Smith 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-6 and Renwick followed suit with a marathon, 6-0, 3-6, 10-4 victory over Caroline Hutchinson of Wartburg. … The Cardinals had four athletes record their first collegiate singles wins in 2021 — Henderson, Peterson, Sarrianna Hoffer (Wausau, Wis.), and Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.).

• DOUBLING UP: The doubles team of Morgan/Peterson leads the Cardinals with five doubles wins. The duo are a near-perfect 5-1 this season, with all six matches coming at No. 1 doubles. … Henderson/Dosser are second on the team in dual-match doubles wins with four. … Frye and Morgan teamed up to go 3-1 in doubles play at last fall’s ITA Regional/Midwest Open.

• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals have played all seven of their matches this season on their home court. SMU has picked up nine of its last 10 wins at the Winona Tennis Center.

• BRING IN THE BROOMS: Saint Mary’s posted three straight 8-0 doubles wins in their 9-0 victory over Martin Luther on Jan. 29.

• UNBEATABLE: The Cardinals remained unbeaten against Bethany Lutheran with last Saturday’s victory. All nine Cardinal wins against the Vikings have been 9-0 sweeps.

• DOMINANCE: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 29, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 16. SMU is 17-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last eight meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts.

• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: With their win over Bethany Lutheran last Saturday, the Cardinals improved to 71-20 against nonconference opponents since 2012.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Knights enter their spring trip sitting at 2-1 overall, having beating Anderson and Manchester (IN), while falling to Cornerstone.

• LAST TIME OUT: After winning two of the three doubles matches, Cornerstone rattled off six straight-set singles wins in dropping Calvin 8-1 on Sept. 22 in Grand Rapids, Mich.

• BRING OUT THE BROOMS: Both of Calvin’s wins this season have been 9-0 sweeps.

• SINGLES LEADERS: Cameron Cyrus, Alexis Ganop, and Catherine Grissom are all 2-0 in singles play, while Emily Schellenbroom, Grace Brown, Maggie Shoemaker, Sara Kroeze, Marissa Baker, and Averi Lewis all own one singles win.

• DOUBLING UP: The doubles teams of Schellenbroom/Grissom, Brown/Shoemaker, and Gadop/Cyrus have all collected two wins through three matches this season.

• FOR THE RECORD: Houghton enters spring-trip play sitting at 3-8 overall, including a 3-3 mark in its six Empire 8 matches.

• LAST TIME OUT: The Highlanders gave top-seeded Nazareth all it could handle in the teams’ Empire 8 Tournament semifinal match, winning two of the three doubles matches, only to have Nazareth win four of the six singles contests in topping Houghton 5-4 in Houghton, NY.

• SINGLES LEADER: Tessa Brown has amassed a team-leading six singles wins, one more than both Chloe Esch and Erin Haley. Maddison Soth has chipped in three singles victories and Elise Swanson had notched two. … Brown — who has played at three different singles positions en route to her 6-5 record — has won each of her last two matches and is the only Highlander entering spring-trip action riding a singles winning streak.

• DOUBLING UP: The doubles team of Swanson/Haley leads the team with five victories, one more than Esch/Soth. … All five of the wins by Swanson/Haley have come at No. 1 doubles, where they have played 10 of the team’s 11 contests. … As a team, Houghton has used two different doubles pairs at No. 1, while three different combinations have competed for the Highlanders at No. 2 and four have appeared at No. 3.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Lions enter their spring trip to Orlando, Fla., riding a season-opening four-match winning streak, having dispatched of Tuskegee, Birmingham-Southern, Johnson & Wales, and Methodist to kick off the year.

• LAST TIME OUT: The Lions picked up wins in two of the three doubles matches, and held off a furious Methodist rally in singles to secure the 6-3 victory on Feb. 20 in Demorest, GA.

• HOME (AND AWAY) SWEET HOME: Piedmont has had success both at home and one the road this season, going 2-0 on its home courts, while picked up wins in both of its road contests, as well.

• SINGLES LEADERS: Imani Vincent leads the team with four singles wins — entering the Lions’ spring trip schedule a perfect 4-0 — while Melissa Gish has picked up three singles victories, followed by Alyssa McSpadden and Marion Sloyan with two wins each. … As a team, Piedmont is 19-4 in singles play — including a perfect 4-0 at Nos. four and six. The Lions are 3-1 at Nos. 1, 2, and 4, and 2-1 at No. 6.

• DOUBLING UP: The doubles teams of Maggie Moody/Gish and McSpadden/Vincent have each recorded two doubles wins to lead the team. … Piedmont has used 15 different doubles combinations — including six at both No. 2 and No. 3.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Cougars head into their season-ending spring trip sitting at 4-11 overall, including 3-5 in Crossroads Conference play.

• LAST TIME OUT: MVN came up empty in its three matches in Richmond, KY, falling to Georgetown (6-1), 16th-ranked Cumberland (7-0), and Midway (5-2).

• LIMPING HOME: The Cougars enter their spring trip having dropped three straight and six of their last seven.
