GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team kicked off its day with a win — and picked up right where they left off in match No. 2.
The Cardinals — fresh off an 8-1 nonconference win over Ripon — completed a perfect 2-for-2 afternoon, sweeping the three doubles matches and adding four singles wins in cruising past Lawrence 7-2 Friday at the Green Bay Tennis Club.
"We started so well in doubles and just kept it rolling," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "This was a big second win — Lawrence is a tough team and we needed to be at our best to beat them."
Saint Mary's took control of the nonconference match right from the get-go, getting doubles wins from
Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.)/
Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) at No. 1,
E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.)/
Peter Quinn (Lake Elmo, Minn.) at No. 2, and
Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.)/
Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.) at No. 3.
Hietala and Besek recorded straight-set singles wins — Hietala winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. three and Besek 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 — while Janssen and Raabolle both needed three sets to record victories. Janssen delivered a 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 win at No. 2, while Raabolle rallied from a set down for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 win at No. 4.
The Cardinals (3-2 overall) close out their two-day stay in Green Bay on Saturday, returning to the Green Bay Tennis Club for a 3 p.m. nonconference match against St. Norbert.
