Cardinals top SNC for 3rd straight win

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team took the courts at the Green Bay Tennis Club for a third time in less than 24 hours on Saturday afternoon looking for a third straight nonconference victory.

Mission accomplished.

The Cardinals were dominant from start-to-finish en route to their third straight victory, rolling to an 8-1 triumph over St. Norbert,

"We ended the weekend in style," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg, whose team opened its weekend with an 8-1 win over Ripon and a 7-2 victory against Lawrence on Friday. "The guys played great tennis throughout. We played well in our two matches on Friday and just picked up where we left off today."

Saint Mary's took charge from the opening serve, as the duos of Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.)/Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.), E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.)/Peter Quinn (Lake Elmo, Minn.), and Brendan Raabolle (Andover, Minn.)/Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.) recorded wins of 8-4, 8-3, and 8-2, respectively to give the Cardinals a quick 3-0 lead.

Kurilla, Janssen, Hietala, and Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) delivered straight-set singles wins, and Raabolle completed the victory with a marathon, thee-set 6-2, 1-6, 12-10 win at No. 5.

The Cardinals (3-2 overall) are now off until Feb. 18-19, when they entertain UW-Superior and Loras in back-to-back nonconference matches at the Winona Tennis Center. SMU will host UW-Superior at 6 p.m. on Feb. 18, before squaring off against Loras at 4:30 p.m. the following afternoon.
