• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals enter this weekend’s nonconference matches sitting at 1-2 overall on the year — falling to Northwestern and Carleton, while beating Martin Luther, in their three matches last weekend.

• HOME SWEET HOME: All three of the Cardinals’ matches last weekend were played on their home court. Saint Mary’s four wins last season all came on their home courts — defeating Loras (7-2), Wartburg (6-3), Hamline (6-3), and Concordia (9-0).

• SINGLED OUT: E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) and Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) picked up singles wins against both Northwestern and Martin Luther last weekend. Hietala — who rattled off three straight singles wins to open ITA Regional/Midwest Open on Oct. 1 — leads the team with five singles wins. 

• CAREER FIRSTS: Tanner Tschumper (Foley, Minn.) and Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) each picked up their first collegiate singles wins at the ITA Regional/Midwest Open on Oct. 1. Tschumper kicked off his collegiate career with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 victory over Hamline’s Britton Von Ruden, while Raabolle dropped Northwestern’s Eli Henderson, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 victory. Tschumper and Raabolle joined Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.), Hietala, and Reilly Fredell (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who all notched their first Cardinal wins in 2021.

• GOING THE DISTANCE:Of the Cardinals’ 11 singles matches during the opening day of the ITA Regional/Midwest Open on Oct. 1-2, four were extended to a third set.

• DOUBLING UP: Janssen/Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.), Hietala/Peter Quinn (Lake Elmo, Minn.), and Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.)/Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa) have accounted for Saint Mary’s three doubles victories this season.

• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 7-2 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 29, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 19 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.

• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: With their 6-3 loss to Northwestern and 7-2 victory over Martin Luther on Jan. 28-29, the Cardinals are now 68-26 in nonconference matches since 2012. 

• FOR THE RECORD: The Red Hawks enter 2022 on the heels of a 3-7 season a year ago, including a 1-3 showing in Midwest Conference play. Ripon was eliminated from post-season play by St. Norbert, falling to the Green Knights 8-1 in the first round of the MWC Tournament.

• BUSY HOME SLATE: Ripon played eight of its 10 matches last season on its home courts. The Red Hawks finished the year 3-5 at home, while dropping both of its road contests. This season, Ripon will play seven of 13 matches at home — including four of its first five.

• MIAC FOES: Saint Mary’s is the first of two foes from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the Red Hawks, who also have a March 19 date at Saint John’s on their schedule.

• SINGLES LEADER: Vince Ireland closed out the 2021 season with a team-leading six singles wins. Ireland played at three different positions en route to a 6-4 showing — going 1-2 at No. 4, 4-2 at No. 5 and 1-0 at No. 6. Drew Jorgensen ended the year second to Ireland with five singles victories, all coming at No. 1 — where he finished 5-4. … Ripon did not have a player play at 10 matches at the same position.

• DOUBLING UP: Ireland and Jorgensen each picked up four doubles victories in 2021. Ireland teamed up with Jonah Roeper for a pair of wins and added two more victories as Preston Wurtz’s doubles partner. Jorgensen, meanwhile, won three times with Marcus Austin and added another win with Wurtz. 

• AS A TEAM: Ripon closed out the year going 21-39 in singles play — including a team-best 5-5 showing at Nos. 1, 5, and 6. Ripon finished 3-7 at No. 2, 2-8 at No. 3, and 1-9 at No.4. … In doubles play, Ripon compiled a 10-20 mark, going 5-5 at No. 3, 4-6 at No. 1, and 1-9 at No. 2. The Red Hawks used 10 different doubles combinations in 2021.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings have not competed since early March of 2020. Lawrence did not compete during the 2021 spring season, but to lack of available athletes due to the COVID pandemic. Lawrence's student population was split between in-person instruction and distance learning throughout the 2020-21 academic year, forcing the team to abandon the season.

• RECENT SUCCESS: Lawrence has had great success in recent seasons, posting four consecutive trips to the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament between 2016 and 2019 — including a second-place finish in 2019. The Vikings were poised to make a fifth straight trip to the Midwest Conference Tournament, but the 2020 spring season was cut short by the pandemic.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Green Knights head into Saturday’s season-opener against Saint Mary’s on the heels of a 3-6 overall showing a year ago, including a 1-3 record in Midwest Conference play. SNC reached the second round of the MWC Tournament, beating Ripon (8-1), before being ousted by Lake Forest (9-0).

• MIAC FOES: Saint Mary’s is the first of two nonconference matches against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the Green Knights, who will also face MIAC newcomer St. Scholastica on Feb. 27.

• HOME SWEET HOME: St. Norbert picked up all three of its wins a year ago on its home court. The Green Knights were 3-3 at home, while falling in all three road contests.

• SINGLED OUT: David Vandenberg and Jayden accounted for 10 of the team’s 19 singles victories, with each compiling a 5-4 overall record. Wartman collected all five of his wins at No. 1 singles — where he played all nine matches — while Vandenberg won twice at No. 4 and three times at No. 5. … Porter Beilfuss closed out the year second to Wartman and Vandenberg with four singles wins.

• STAYING PUT: Wartman and Andrew Gehring were the only Green Knights to play all nine singles matches at the same position — Wartman at No. 1 and Gehring at No. 2.

• 0-FOR-6: St. Norbert did not win a singles match at No. 6 all last season, with three different players combining to go 0-9.

• DOUBLING UP: Gehring and Wartman teams to record half of SNC’s 10 doubles victories in 2021, going 4-5 at No. 1 doubles. Vandenberg and Charlie Vandermillen were second on the team in doubles wins with three. 

• FINDING THE RIGHT COMBO: SNC used five different doubles combinations at No. 3 last season.

• AS A TEAM: St. Norbert closed out the 2021 season with a 19-35 record in singles play — finishing 5-4 at Nos. 1 and 4, 4-5 at No. 5, 3-6 at No. 3, 2-7 at No. 2, and 0-9 at No. 6. In doubles play, SNC finished the year 10-17, including 4-5 at No. 1 and 3-6 at both No. 2 and No. 3.
