SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals closed out the 2022 season sitting at 11-8 overall, including a 4-6 mark in conference play that left them one win away from qualifying for the conference tournament.
• IN THE FALL: Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.), Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) collected singles wins at the Gustavus Fall Invitational in late September, while Dosser/Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) and Henderson/Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) earned doubles victories.
• DOMINANCE: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther in their meeting last season, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 16. SMU is 17-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last eight meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts. … Saint Mary’s posted three straight 8-0 doubles wins in their 9-0 victory over Martin Luther a year ago.
• WINNING BIG: Five of SMU’s 11 wins were 9-0 sweeps, while three victories had been by 8-1 counts. SMU’s 6-3 win over Concordia on March 20, and its 5-4 wins over Macalester and Bethel on March 26-27 rounded out the Cardinals’ 11 victories.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) closed out the 2022 season leading the Cardinals with 13 dual-match singles wins. … Peterson finished second to Becker with 10 singles wins, one more than Henderson and three in front of Renwick. … Renwick had her season-high six-match singles winning streak snapped against Carleton, while Henderson and Becker both put together five-match winning streaks in 2022.
• SINGLED OUT: The Cardinals collected nine singles victories at the 2021 ITA Regional/Midwest Open, led by Renwick, Henderson, and Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.) with two each.
• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Buerman and Renwick picked up their first collegiate singles wins at the 2021 ITA Regional/Midwest Open on Sept. 24-25. Buerman outlasted Northwestern’s Taylar Smith 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-6 and Renwick followed suit with a marathon, 6-0, 3-6, 10-4 victory over Caroline Hutchinson of Wartburg.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: Four of the six singles matches in SMU’s 8-1 loss to Saint Benedict on Feb. 26, 2022 were stretched to a third set, including a 1-6, 6-1, 10-2 win by Peterson at No. 1. The other two singles matches vs. the Blazers included a first-set tiebreaker.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles team of Henderson/Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.) led the team with seven wins last season, one more than Peterson/Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.). … Dosser/Henderson ended the year 3-0 at No. 2 and 4-3 at No. 3, while Peterson/Morgan were 6-6 — all at No. 1 doubles. … Individually, Dosser and Henderson each had a hand in a team-high 10 doubles-wins, followed by Peterson with nine, and Morgan and Frye with eight each. … SMU used two doubles combinations at No. 1 and five at No. 3, while having six different pairs team up at No. 2.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals, who played their first seven matches on their home court, boasted a 6-4 record at home in 2022, while going 5-4 away from the Winona Tennis Center. … SMU has picked up 10 of its last 14 wins at the Winona Tennis Center.
• LUCKY NO. 15: The Cardinals’ 9-0 win over Hamline on April 9, 2022 extended their winning streak over the Pipers to 15 straight matches. SMU has not lost to Hamline since a 5-4 setback on Feb. 11, 2006. Saint Mary’s is 21-1 in its last 22 matches against the Pipers and are 23-7 all-time against Hamline.
• COMING FROM BEHIND: It was a weekend of come-from-behind victories for the Cardinals on April 2-3, 2022, as Saint Mary’s rallied from 4-2 deficits in beating both Macalester and Bethel by identical 5-4 decisions. Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.), Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.), and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) posted the decisive singles wins in both victories for the Cardinals.
• NEAR-PERFECT: The Cardinals dropped just 11 games in their nonconference match against Bethany Lutheran on Feb. 26, 2022, posting 8-0 and 8-4 wins in doubles (plus a forfeit victory at No. 3), and adding a pair of 6-0, 6-0 sweeps by Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) and Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), while dropping just seven games in the other four singles contests.
• UNBEATABLE: The Cardinals remained unbeaten against Bethany Lutheran all-time with their 9-0 win over the Vikings on Feb. 26. All nine Cardinal wins against the Vikings have been 9-0 sweeps.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ spring trip matches against Calvin, Houghton, Piedmont and Mount Vernon Nazarene were all the first meetings in program history.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: With their 2-2 showing in Orlando, Fla., the Cardinals improved to 73-22 against nonconference opponents since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
