SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown at St. Olaf sitting at 6-3-3 overall, including 2-2-1 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Cohan Hare scored the game-tying goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, and Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) finished with 12 saves, as the Cardinals rallied to tie Bethel 1-1 last Saturday at Ochrymowycz Field.
• ON A ROLL: The Cardinals pushed their unbeaten streak to five (3-0-2) with last Saturday’s 1-1 tie against Bethel. SMU has now put together a five-game, 3-0-2 unbeaten streak in each of the last two seasons, having opened the year 3-0-2 in 2022.
• HOME SWEET HOME: With their 1-0 win over Concordia last on Sept. 30, SMU has now picked up five of its last eight wins on its home field. The Cardinals are 3-1-2 at Ochrymowycz Field this season.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: The Cardinals put an end to a 24-game conference winless streak (0-22-2) with their 1-0 victory over Concordia on Sept. 30. SMU’s last MIAC victory was a 4-1 triumph over Hamline on Oct. 26, 2019.
• STREAK-SNAPPER II & III: With their 1-0 win over No. 23 Gustavus on Oct. 3 the Cardinals ended a four-game losing streak vs. the Gusties — and put together their first two-game MIAC winning streak since late in the 2019 season … SMU hadn’t won back-to-back league games since dropping Concordia (2-1) on Oct. 19, 2019 and Hamline (4-1) seven days later.
• CLOSE CALLS: Thirty-one of the Cardinals’ last 42 games have been decided by one goal or less — including 10 of SMU’s 12 games this season.
• FIT TO BE TIED: For the second year in a row, the Cardinals have played to a scoreless tie this season. Saint Mary’s and Wisconsin Lutheran battled to a scoreless deadlock on Sept. 3. … The Cardinals’ three ties last season — including a 0-0 deadlock against Concordia on Oct. 1 — were the most since the 2015 season, when Saint Mary’s finished the year with three ties en route to a 6-9-3 overall record.
• CAREER GAMES: Saint Mary’s boasts three players who have scored their first collegiate goals this season. Rojan Monger (St. Paul, Minn.) netted his first collegiate goal in the Cardinals’ 2-1 win over Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 6, while Diego Giles (Columbia Heights, Minn.) scored his first goal as a Cardinal against Simpson three days later, and Martin Garr (Monticello, Minn.) found the back of the net for the first time against Lawrence on Wednesday.
• CAREER GAMES II: Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) and Aidan Adamek (Helena, Mont.) each scored their first — and second — collegiate goals in SMU’s season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Sept. 1.
• HE SHOOTS, AND SCORES: With his goals against Gustavus and Bethel last week, Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) moved atop the team lead with six goals, two more than Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.) and two up on Adamek, while Monger, Giles, Palislamovic, and Garr own SMU’s other four goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Along with his six goals, Hare has also assisted on all three of Adamek’s goals, while Hurley owns a pair of helpers, and Monger, Giles, Garr, Barick Makabi (Iowa City, Iowa) and Martin Garr (Monticello, Minn.) have also collected single assists this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: With five goals and three assists, Hare leads the Cardinals’ points race with 15. Hurley is second on the squad with 10 points (4 G, 2 A), four more than Adamek (3 G), followed by Monger (1 G, 1 A, 3 Pts), Giles (1 G, 1 A, 3 Pts), and Garr (1 G, 1 A).
• PLENTY OF PKs: With his PK goal against Concordia last Saturday, Hurley has now accounted for seven of SMU’s last eight penalty-kick goals — going 4-for-4 this season and 3-for-4 a year ago. … Hurley’s seven career PK goals put him No. 1 in program history, three more than Eli Szymanski.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) has started 10 of the Cardinals’ 12 games this season, compiling a 1.06 goals-against-average and an .866 save percentage. … Sessler led the MIAC in saves last season with 119, and has stopped 71 of the 82 shots he’s faced this season. … Jason Marcus (Gresham, Ore.) did not have to face a shot in his first collegiate start against Lawrence on Wednesday, while Ryan Horlock (Batavia, Ill.) also made his first collegiate appearance against the Vikings, playing the game’s final 45 minutes.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Sessler owns three shutouts this season — a seven-save effort against Wisconsin Lutheran on Sept. 3, a two-save showing against Concordia on Sept. 30, and a 15-save performance against No. 23 Gustavus on Oct. 3 — and now has six shutouts in his four-year collegiate career. The senior had one shutout in each of his first three seasons — including a 12-save performance in blanking Concordia on Oct. 1, 2022.
• BUSY NIGHTS: Sessler, who made 10 or more saves four times in 2022, stopped a career-high 15 shots in SMU’s 1-0 win over No. 23 Gustavus on Oct. 3, and added a 12-save effort against Bethel four days later. The 15- and 12-save performances vs. Gustavus and Bethel marked the second and third times this season the senior has stopped 10+ shots, having posted a then-career-best 13 saves in a 1-1 tie against Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 24.
• OFF AND RUNNING: With their 4-0 victory over Martin Luther on Sept. 1, the Cardinals improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight season-openers, the lone blemish a 3-0 loss to the University of Dubuque a year ago, and a 1-1 tie with St. Olaf during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 4-0 win against Martin Luther on Sept. 1, the Cardinals are now a perfect 8-0-0 all-time against Martin Luther, and have outscored the Knights 30-2 in those eight meetings. … Saint Mary’s five goals in last year’s 5-2 win over the Knights were a season high — and the most goals scored in a game since netting five against MLC in a 5-0 win in 2021.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals’ six wins this season are the most since the 2019 season, when SMU finished 8-10-0. … Saint Mary’s has scored nine of their 16 goals this season in the first half. SMU’s opponents, meanwhile, have netted five goals in the first half and seven after the intermission. … Saint Mary’s has attempted 124 shots in 12 games, including 53 on goal, while the Cardinals’ opponents have taken 182 shots, with 87 reaching their target. … SMU netted a season-high four goals in its season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Sept. 1.
ST. OLAF SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: St. Olaf heads into Wednesday’s mid-week conference showdown against Saint Mary’s boasting an 8-3-1 overall record, including a 4-0-1 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Oles got a first-half tally from Casey McCloskey and second-half goals by Shea Bechtel and Agostino Quadrio Curzio, as St. Olaf put an end to Bethany Lutheran’s nine-game unbeaten streak with a 3-1 nonconference win Monday in Mankato, Minn.
• TOUGH SLATE: All three of St. Olaf’s losses this season have come against teams nationally ranked at the time of their meeting. STO fell to No. 1 University of Chicago (4-2) to kick off the season on Sept. 1, while also falling to No. 24 Ohio Wesleyan (2-1) and No. 5 Knox (2-0) on Sept. 8 and Sept. 10. St. Olaf also owns a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Carleton and a 1-1 tie against No. 21 Macalester.
• ON A ROLL: Since dropping three of their first four games, the Oles have gone 7-0-1 in their last eight contests — sandwiching winning streaks of four and three games around a 1-1 tie against No. 21 Macalester on Sept. 30. … St. Olaf has outscored its opponents 18-3 during its current eight game run.
• SEASON TO REMEMBER: St. Olaf ended the 2022 season with a 15-5-2 overall record, including a 7-2-1 mark in MIAC play. The Oles closed out the year going 6-0-2 in its final eight games — winning the MIAC Playoff title with a 2-1 victory over fifth-ranked Gustavus, and reaching the NCAA Tournament sectional semifinal, where the lost to the Gusties in a shootout.
• HOME SWEET HOME: St. Olaf has lost just once in six home contests this season, going 4-1-1 at Rolf Melby Field, while sporting a 4-2-0 mark on the road. … The Oles are in the midst of playing four of five contests on the road, the lone exception, Wednesday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s.
• HE SHOOTS, AND SCORES: St. Olaf has gotten goals from 15 different players, led by Hakeem Morgan, who has found the back of the net eight times. Shea Bechtel and Victor Gaulmin are second on the team with six goals each, while Casey McCloskey and Clemente Arcuch Puig each own two tallies. … Morgan has scored in five of St. Olaf’s 12 games, including a two-goal effort against St. Scholastica on Sept. 23, and a season-high three goals against Knox on Sept.3. … Bechtel and Gaulmin, meanwhile, has also scored in five games, with Bechtel posting a season-best two goals against Knox on Sept. 3 and Gaulmin adding a two-goal effort against the University of Chicago on Sept. 1.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: McCloskey enters Wednesday’s game boasting a team-high five assists, one more than Bechtel, with Gaulmin chipping in three helpers, and Morgan, Arcuch Puig, Dimitri Nair, and Liam Vance all chipping in two.
• POINT PRODUCTION: St. Olaf has three players who have amassed more than 10 points through 12 games this season. Morgan leads the way with 18 points (8 G, 2 A), followed by Bechtel with 16 (6 G, 2 A), and Gaulmin with 15 (6 G, 3 A).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Peter Forseth has started 11 of the team’s 12 games in goal, compiling a 1.09 goals-against-average and a .769 save percentage. Austin Williams (0.00 GAA, 1.000 save %) has made the other start in goal, while Jack Hobday (0.00 GAA, .000 save %) has play 3:17 minutes in relief. … Forseth has made 40 saves on 51 shots, with Williams stopping both shots he faced in his lone start. … Forseth made a season-high eight saves in a 1-1 tie against Macalester on Sept. 30.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, St. Olaf holds a 206-108 advantage in shots attempted, including a commanding 97-54 edge in shots on goal. … The Oles have scored 15 goals in the first half and 19 in the second en route to their 34-goal output through 12 games. On the flip side, STO’s opponents have scored seven first-half goals, and five after the break. … St. Olaf has scored six or more goals in a game three times this season — netting six in a 6-1 win over Bethel on Sept. 13, and adding a season-high seven goals in 7-0 wins against both Knox on Sept. 3 and Luther on Sept. 20. … STO has allowed more than two goals in a game just once, surrendering four in a season-opening 4-2 loss to then-No. 1-ranked University of Chicago.
