SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals — coming off an 11-8 season in 2022 — head into this weekend’s trio of matches sitting at 2-0 overall, thanks to 9-0 wins over Martin Luther and the University of Dubuque in their first two contests of the 2023 season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s dominated the singles matches last Saturday — posting straight-set wins in all five contested matches (SMU won by forfeit at No. 6) — in cruising to its second straight 9-0 victory.
• DOMINANCE: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 17. SMU is 18-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last nine meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts. … Saint Mary’s has dropped just one game in its six doubles matches against the Knights over the last two years.
• WINNING BIG: Seven of SMU’s last 13 wins have been 9-0 sweeps — including both victories this season — while three other victories over the last two seasons have been by 8-1 counts.
• IN THE FALL: Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.), Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) collected singles wins at the Gustavus Fall Invitational in late September, while Dosser/Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) and Henderson/Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) earned doubles victories.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.), who closed out the 2022 season leading the Cardinals with 13 dual-match singles wins, is one of five SMU players who have opened the season 2-0 in singles play. Dosser, Buerman, Renwick, and Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.) are also riding season-opening two-match singles winning streaks. … Renwick put together a season-high six-match winning streak a year ago — the longest among Cardinal players — while Henderson and Becker each boasted five-match win streaks.
• STICKING WITH WHAT WORKS: The Cardinals have used the same singles lineup in both of their matches this season — Becker at No. 1, Dosser at No. 2, Renwick at No. 3, Buerman at No. 4, Boomgaarden at No. 5, and Henderson at No. 6.
• DOUBLING UP: Becker, Dosser, Henderson, and Renwick has all collected two doubles wins, with Boomgaarden and Buerman each owning one victory. … Dossser/Henderson are 2-0 as a team at No. 1 doubles, while Becker/Renwick are 2-0 at No. 2, and Buerman/Boomgaarden are 1-0 at No. 3. … Henderson and Dosser combined to post a team-high seven doubles wins last year, one more than Peterson/Kennedy Morgan. … Individually, Dosser and Henderson each had a hand in a team-high 10 doubles-wins last season, followed by Peterson with nine.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals, who played their first seven matches on their home court a year ago, are 8-4 in their last 12 home matches — including 2-0 this season — while going 5-4 away from the Winona Tennis Center. … SMU has now picked up 12 of its last 16 wins at the Winona Tennis Center.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: With their season-opening 9-0 wins over Martin Luther and the University of Dubuque, the Cardinals improved to 75-22 against nonconference opponents since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
