WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team took to the courts against Bethany Lutheran Saturday afternoon having never lost to the Vikings.
And the Cardinals weren't about to see that streak come to an end.
For the 10th time in as many meetings between the two teams, the Cardinals dealt the Vikings a 9-0 nonconference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"The ladies played really well today," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "A big should out as to go to
Kathryn Stiegel for her first collegiate win. Everyone played very well, and it was a great way to head into our spring break trip."
The Cardinals came storming out of the blocks, wining all three doubles matches — with
Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.)/
Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) winning 8-3 at No. 1,
Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.)/
Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) posting an 8-4 win at No. 2, and
Peyton Buerman/
Kara Hand (Lisle, Ill.) adding an 8-1 victory at No. 3.
And nothing changed in singles, as Saint Mary's posted five straight-set wins — including Stiegel's first collegiate victory at No. 6 to seal the win. Dosser, Renwick, Henderson, and
Ella Boomgaarden joined Stiegel as straight-set singles winnings, while Buerman needed three sets to post a 6-0, 4-6, 10-2 win at No. 3.
The Cardinals (3-3 overall) are back in action on Monday, when they square off against Calvin for the first of three nonconference matches at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. SMU will also face Adrian (Tuesday) and Albion (Thursday) during their spring trip.
