ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team came up short in its spring-trip opener against Calvin Monday afternoon, falling to the Knights 6-3 at the USTA National Campus.
Â
But Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg certainly couldn't fault the effort.
Â
"The ladies played an exceptional match," said Halberg. "Calvin is a very strong team and we gave them a battle from start-to-finish."
Â
The Knights grabbed a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, with
Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) and
Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) teaming for an 8-4 win to account for the Cardinals' lone doubles victory.
Â
The duo were at it again in singles, as Becker delivered a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles and Renwick outlasted Calvin's Maggie Shoemaker 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 3.
Â
The Cardinals (3-4 overall) are back in action on Tuesday, when they return to the USTA National Campus for a nonconference matchup against Adrian. First serve is slated for noon (EST).
