SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their three-match spring trip to Orlando, Fla., sitting at 3-3 overall, including dropping their first two MIAC matches to nationally ranked conference powers Gustavus and Carleton.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s made quick work of Bethany Lutheran in the teams’ nonconference matchup last Saturday, as the Cardinals rolled to a 9-0 victory over the Vikings at the Winona Tennis Center.
• DOMINATION: With Saturday’s win over Bethany Lutheran, the Cardinals improved to 10-0 all-time against the Vikings — with all 10 matches ending in 9-0 sweeps.
• WINNING BIG: Eight of SMU’s last 14 wins have been 9-0 sweeps — including all three victories this season — while three other victories over the last two seasons have been by 8-1 counts.
• IN THE FALL: Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.), Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) collected singles wins at the Gustavus Fall Invitational in late September, while Dosser/Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) and Henderson/Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) earned doubles victories.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) enters spring break play leading the Cardinals in singles wins with four, one more than Buerman, Dosser, Renwick, and Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.). … Henderson has won each of her last two singles matches. … Renwick put together a season-high six-match winning streak a year ago — the longest among Cardinal players — while Henderson and Becker each boasted five-match win streaks.
• WIN NO. 1: Kathryn Stiegel (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) picked up her first collegiate singles victory last Saturday against Bethany Lutheran, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.
• DOUBLING UP: Dosser and Henderson have teamed up to post a team-leading four doubles wins in six matches paired together. … Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) and Renwick are second on the team with three doubles wins, going 3-3. … Dosser/Henderson and Becker/Renwick have played all six contests at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, while the teams of Boomgaarden/Buerman (1-2), Boomgaarden-Kara Hand (Lisle, Ill.) (0-1), and Buerman/Hand (1-0) have all seen time at No. 3 doubles. …
• HOME SWEET HOME: With last Saturday’s win over Bethany Lutheran, the Cardinals are 9-4 in their last 13 home matches — including 3-0 this season — while going 5-4 away from the Winona Tennis Center. … SMU has now picked up 13 of its last 17 wins at the Winona Tennis Center.
• STREAKING ALONG: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 17. SMU is 18-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last nine meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts. … Saint Mary’s has dropped just one game in its six doubles matches against the Knights over the last two years.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: With their 9-0 wins over Martin Luther, the University of Dubuque, and Bethany Lutheran, the Cardinals improved to 76-22 against nonconference opponents since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
CALVIN KNIGHTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Knights head into their four-match spring trip boasting a 3-1 overall record — sandwiching 9-0 wins over Wisconsin Lutheran and Concordia (Mich.) around a 6-3 loss to North Park. Calvin also has a pair of exhibition matches against Cornerstone (L, 8-1) and Aquinas (W, 5-4) on its docket.
• LAST TIME OUT: Trailing 2-1 after the doubles portion of its exhibition match against Aquinas on Feb. 4, Calvin delivered four straight-set wins en route to the 5-4 victory.
• SINGLED OUT: Tessa Holman, Elise Noirman, and Maggie Shoemaker all head into Calvin’s four spring trip matches unbeaten in three singles contests, while Lexy Ganop and Emily Schellenboom have each chipped in two singles victories. … Calvin has used two different players at No. 1 singles, while three different Knights have competed at each of the other five singles positions. … Calvin owns a 15-3 singles record through three matches.
• DOUBLING UP: Marissa Baker, Catherine Grissom, and Schellenboom share the team lead with two doubles victories apiece. … Grissom/Schellenboom have teamed to go 2-1 at No. 1 doubles — they are the only doubles pair to have played all three matches together — with all three coming at No. 1. … As a team, Calvin is 6-3 in doubles play this season.
ADRIAN BULLDOGS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Bulldogs head into the spring portion of its schedule — which will kick off with matches vs. Rose-Hulman, Saint Mary’s, U. of Mary, and Warner (Fla.) — sitting at 3-2 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: Adrian has not competed since Sept. 26, when the Bulldogs dropped a 5-2 nonconference decision to Bethel (Ind.) in Mishawaka, Ind.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: After opening the season with a 5-2 loss to Ohio Northern, Adrian rattled off three straight wins — beating Hanover (6-3), Manchester (Ind.) (7-2), and Anderson (Ind.) (6-3), before falling to Bethel (Ind.).
• SINGLED OUT: Ellie Himebauch heads into spring break lead the Bulldogs with four, dual-match singles wins, one more than Jules Johnson and Claire Earley (3-2). Liv Depies and Bethany Posey have both won twice in singles play, while Claire Carley, Ava Hovey, and Regan Snyder have each collected one singles win. … Johnson has played every match at No. 1 singles, as has Depies at No. 4. … Adrian has used three different players at No. 3 singles, with the trio combining for a perfect 5-0 record.
• DOUBLING UP: The teams of Earley/Depies and Johnson/Himebauch have each combined for a team-leading two wins for the Bulldogs, who have gone 7-8 in doubles play this season. … Vasiliki Gargasoulas has picked up wins with two separate partners, going 1-1 with Bethany Posey and 1-1 with Maddison Wagner.
ALBION BRITONS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Britons enter spring break sitting at 2-3 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: Albion had its two-match winning streak snapped with a 9-0 loss to Spring Arbor on Feb. 21. The Britons had defeated Saint Francis (7-2) and Olivet (9-0) prior to their loss to Spring Arbor.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Britons have played four of their first five matches on their home courts — the lone exception, an 8-1 loss to Manchester in North Manchester, Ind., on Oct. 5.
• SINGLED OUT: Savannah McDonald leads the Britons with three singles victories through five matches, one more than Alura Reed, Rosy Zuun, Josie Dunn, and Jesse Hepner. Jaymee Herrington and Lili Robinson have all chipped in one singles victory this season.
• DOUBLING UP: xDunn and McDonald head into spring break sharing the team lead with three doubles victories each, followed by Zuun, Herrington, Hepner, and Robinson with one win apiece.
