SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into this weekend’s three nonconference matches sitting at 1-1 overall, having blanked Martin Luther 9-0 in its season-opening last Saturday, before dropping a 9-0 decision in their conference-opener the following afternoon against Carleton.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther last Saturday, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 20 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.
• HITTING THE ROAD: After opening the season with back-to-back home matches, Saint Mary’s will play five of its next six contests on the road — the lone exception, next Saturday’s nonconference matchup against the University of Dubuque. … Five of the Cardinals’ six wins in 2022 came on the road. Saint Mary’s was 1-7 at home, while boasting a 5-5 mark away from the Winona Tennis Center.
• SINGLED OUT: Evan Huemoeller (), E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.), Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.), Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.), Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa), and Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.) all collected singles wins in SMU’s 9-0 victory over Martin Luther last Saturday. … Hietala and Stene closed out the 2022 campaign owning a team-leading 11 dual-match singles wins. … Stene put together a team-high six-match winning streak last season, while Hietala and Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) both won five singles matches in a row in 2022.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Huemoeller posted a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win against Martin Luther last Saturday in his first appearance at No. 1 singles. … Rodning’s 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles against Martin Luther last Saturday was his first collegiate singles victory.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles teams of Huemoeller/Hietala, Stene/Raabolle, and Besek/Rodning all picked up victories against Martin Luther last Saturday. … Janssen/Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) led the Cardinals with 12 doubles wins last season — all at No. 1 — while Hietala/Peter Quinn (Lake Elmo, Minn.) were second with four doubles wins at No. 2. Hietala also teamed with Raabolle to post four wins in eight doubles matches together.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ matches against Calvin, Piedmont, Houghton, and Mount Vernon Nazarene during their spring trip last season were all the first meetings in program history.
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther last Saturday, the Cardinals improved to 72-33 in nonconference play since 2012. …
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
LAWRENCE VIKINGS SCOUTING REPORT
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings head into their season-opening weekend on the heels of a 4-14 season a year ago, that included a 2-4 showing in their six Midwest Conference contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Lawrence came up empty in its regular-season finale a year ago, falling to Lake Forest 9-0 on April 16, 2022.
• SUCCESS ON THE ROAD: LU closed out the 2022 season posting all four of its victories on the road. Lawrence went 0-4 at home, while going 4-10 on the road — including 1-6 in neutral-site matches.
• LIMPING IN: Lawrence opens the season having dropped its last four contests of 2022, falling to Ripon (7-2), Cornell (5-4), Grinnell (8-1), and Lake Forest (9-0). LU finished 2-7 in its last eight matches a year ago.
• SINGLED OUT: Andrew Larson delivered a team-high 11 singles wins last season, finishing the year 11-7 — having played all 18 matches at No. 1 singles. Yui Ito was second on the squad with seven wins, followed by Dylan Delgado, Jackson Gross, and Cam Strawn with four wins each. … Larson was the only Viking to play every match at the same position. LU used two different players at No. 2 and 3, while three different Vikings played at Nos. 4, 5, and 6.
• DOUBLING UP: Larson and Ito teamed up to lead the Vikings with five doubles wins in 2022, one more than Strawn/Rahul Sabnis and two in front of Delgado/Jonathan Hogan. … Lawrence, which went 16-38 in doubles play last season, used two different combinations at No. 1 doubles, three combos at No. 3, and five at No. 2.
RIPON RED HAWKS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Red Hawks head into their season-opening weekend on the heels of a 7-9 season a year ago, including a 4-2 mark in their six Midwest Conference matches.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Five of Ripon’s seven wins last season came on its home courts. The Red Hawks finished the year 5-2 at home, while going 2-5 on the road — including 0-2 in neutral-site matches.
• SINGLED OUT: Jaden Francis and Ty Rondestvedt each finished the 2022 season with eight dual-match singles victories. Both Francis and Rondestvedt added one tournament victory to finish the year with nine overall singles wins. … Marcus Austin was third on the team with seven dual victories, followed by Preston Wurtz with five.
• PLENTY OF OPTIONS: Ripon used a number of different line-ups en route to its 39-53 dual-match singles record in 2022. The Ripon had two different players compete at No. 1, 4, 5, and 6, with three different Red Hawks playing at No. 2 and 3.
• DOUBLING UP: Ripon finished 26-29 in doubles play a year ago, led by Francis/Rondestvedt, who teamed to go 6-8 in 14 dual matches. Austin/Drew Jorgensen were one win back at 5-7, followed by Calvin Battle/Eugene Pilska with a 4-4 mark. … All six of the doubles wins by Francis/Rondestvedt were at No. 2, with Austin/Jorgensen recording all five of theirs at No. 1. … Ripon finished 9-7 at No. 3 doubles a year ago, while sporting a 7-9 mark at No. 2 and a 6-10 showing at No. 1.
ST. NORBERT GREEN KNIGHTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Green Knights head into the weekend still searching for their first win of the 2022-23 season, having dropped back-to-back matches to UW-Stevens Point and Carroll.
• LAST TIME OUT: Brett Daniels accounted for SNC’s lone win in an 8-1 nonconference loss to Carroll on Sept. 24, 2022 in Waukesha, Wis., posting a 62, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
• LIMPING IN: With their 0-2 start to the season, St. Norbert is now 1-7 in its last eight games — the lone win in that span an 8-1 victory over Marian on April 24.
• SINGLED OUT: Daniels has accounted for two of the Green Knights’ three singles wins this season — both coming at No. 1. David Vandenberg owns SNC’s other singles wins, winning at No. 5 against UW-Stevens Point. … Daniels and Vandenberg are the only Green Knights to play both matches at the same position, SNC has used two different players at No. 2, 3, 4, and 6 singles. … Vandenberg finished the 2022 season with seven singles wins, second only to Porter Beilfuss’s team-leading eight.
• DOUBLING UP: St. Norbert has gone 2-4 in its six doubles matches this season, with Brian Colter/Josh Brown owning a wins at No. 2 and Vandenberg/Joe Pellechia collecting a win at No. 3. … Vandenberg teamed with Charlie Vandermillen to go 5-2 as a doubles team a year ago.
