SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdowns against Concordia and Saint John’s this weekend sitting at 7-6 overall, including 0-3 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals got off to a slow start and never recovered in dropping an 8-1 MIAC decision to St. Olaf last Saturday at the Winona Tennis Center.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saturday’s match against Concordia is the second of back-to-back home match for the Cardinals, who are in the midst of playing four of five contest on their home courts — the lone exception, Sunday’s matchup at Saint John’s.. … Saint Mary’s has played just five of its first 13 matches on its home courts. The Cardinals are 3-2 at the Winona Tennis Center this season, while sporting a 4-4 record on the road. … Five of the Cardinals’ six wins in 2022 came on the road.
• SINGLED OUT: Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) picked up his team-leading ninth dual-match singles win against St. Olaf last Saturday. Stene’s nine singles wins are one more than Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa). Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) is third with seven dual-match victories, followed by E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) with six. … Hietala and Stene closed out the 2022 campaign owning a team-leading 11 dual-match singles wins. … Raabolle had his four-match singles winning streak snapped against St. Olaf last Saturday. … Stene put together a team-high six-match winning streak last season, while Hietala and Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) both won five singles matches in a row.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals have had 15 singles contests extended to a third set this season — including three in nonconference losses at Northwestern (Minn.) on Feb. 17 and at St. Norbert on Feb. 5.. … SMU is 11-4 in those 15 three-set matches. … SMU closed out the 2022 season owning a 22-23 mark in its 45 three-setters.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Min.) posted a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 in his first appearance at No. 1 singles. … Rodning’s 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 was his first collegiate singles victory.
• DOUBLING UP: Raabolle leads the team in doubles wins with seven, going 7-4 — including 5-1 partnered with Rodning. … Rodning is second on the squad with six doubles wins, followed by Janssen and Matt Besek (Winona Minn.) with five each. … Besek and Janssen are a perfect 3-0 when paired together. … SMU has used 14 different doubles combinations — including two at No. 1, six at No. 2, and seven at No. 3.
• PERFECT DAY: Hietala and Janssen enjoyed a perfect day in the Cardinals’ nonconference wins over Albion and Adrian on Feb. 28. The duo each picked up singles wins in both matches, while teaming together for a pair of victories at No. 2 doubles.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 20 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.
• TURNING THE TABLES: The Cardinals’ win over Bethany Lutheran on Feb. 25 marked the second straight meeting with the Vikings in which the match ended with a 5-4 decision. BLC beat Saint Mary’s 5-4 a year ago.
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their wins over Albion and Adrian on Feb. 28, the Cardinals moved to 7-3 in nonconference play this season and 78-36 in non-MIAC matches since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
CONCORDIA COBBERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers head into Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 2-5 overall, including 0-2 in their only two conference matches thus far this season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Concordia has been off since March 4, when they dropped an 8-1 conference decision to Macalester at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cobbers have picked up both of their wins this season on their home courts. CC is 2-2 at home, while going 0-5 away from Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D. … Concordia plays three of its final six matches on its home courts.
• SINGLED OUT: Logan Sandberg and Kai Pierce have accounted for 11 of the Cobbers’ 18 singles wins this season. Sandberg leads the team with six victories, one more than Pierce. No other Cobber has more than two singles wins through seven matches. … Sandberg has played all seven matches at No. 1, going 6-1, while Pierce is 5-2 at No. 2. … As a team, Concordia is 18-24 in singles action.
• DOUBLING UP: Sandberg, Pierce, and Matthew Nemer all share the team lead with three doubles wins, one more than Brady Cannon, Kipton Jenson, and Atticus Baker. … Pierce and Sandberg have played all seven matches at No. 1 doubles, going 3-4. … CC has used three different doubles combinations at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
• LIMPING IN: The Cobbers head to the Winona Tennis Center having dropped back-to-back decisions to UW-Superior (9-0) and Macalester (8-1). … CC’s loss to UW-Superior on Feb. 25 marked the only time this season the Cobbers have been swept. On the flip side, one of Concordia’s two wins was also a 9-0 sweep.
SAINT JOHN’S JOHNNIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Johnnies head into their weekend matches against St. Olaf (Saturday) and Saint Mary’s (Sunday) sitting at 2-6 overall, while having lost its lone conference match — a 9-0 decision to St. Scholastica on Feb. 18.
• LAST TIME OUT: SJU closed out its six-match Florida trip with a 5-1 loss to Cedarville on March 10 in Kissimmee, Fla.
• SLUMPING: The Johnnies enter the weekend in the midst of a five-match losing streak. Saint John’s — which has dropped decisions to Judson (8-1), Covenant (6-3), Hampden-Sydney (7-2), Piedmont (5-4) and Cedarville (6-1) — has now won since beating Saint Vincent (9-0) to open its spring trip on March 5.
• ROAD WOES: Saint John’s has won just once in six road matches this season. SJU is 1-1 on its home courts, while going 1-5 away from home.
• SINGLED OUT: Mark Rosen leads the Johnnies with five singles wins, two more than Ryan Will, while Daniel Perez, Ian Aadland, and Peyton Fischer all have two singles victories. … Rosen has played in a team-high three different singles positions, going 0-1 at No. 4, 2-1 at No. 5, and 3-1 at No. 6. … As a team, Saint John’s is 19-29 in singles play.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: Will, Peyton Fischer, Will Fischer, Joe Dwyer, and Aaland all lead the team with a pair of doubles wins, while Cooper Anderson, Taylor Duncan, Hunter Fischer, Evan Kostynick, Will McDowell, and Mason Meyer each own one doubles victory. … Will and Peyton Fischer are the only Johnnie duo to win more than one match as a doubles team, going 2-3 — all at No. 2. … SJU has used 13 different doubles combinations — four at No. 1, three at No. 2, and six at No. 3.
