WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team picked up its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory — in dramatic fashion — Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals, forced to play with a completely different lineup due to injuries, grabbed an early lead after the doubles competition and never relinquished it in dealing Hamline a 5-4 setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
"Just an amazing effort, all the way around," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "The ladies, with three starters out of the lineup, found a way to get the job done and get the win — just a tremendous effort."
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, getting wins from
Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.)/
Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) and
Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.)/
Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.) at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
Becker, Boomgaarden, and Henderson then sealed the victory, recording straight-set singles wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
The Cardinals (1-5 MIAC, 6-7 overall) are back in action next weekend, when they welcome Hamline (Saturday) and St. Catherine (Sunday) to the Winona Tennis Center for MIAC matches. Both contests are slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
