WAUWATOSA, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team was unable to pick up its second straight win Sunday afternoon.
Â
But the Cardinals weren't saddled with their first loss of the 2023 season, either.
Â
Thanks in large part to the stellar play of goalkeeper
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.), the Cardinals — coming off a season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther last Friday — were able to settle for a 0-0 draw against host Wisconsin Lutheran.
Â
The outcome being decided by shutout is nothing new for the Cardinals, who have now had 12 of their last 14 contests end with one or both teams failing to score a goal — including a 0-0 stalemate against Concordia on Oct. 1, 2022.
Â
Sessler finished with seven saves en route to his first shutout of the season and fourth of his collegiate career, while Wisconsin Lutheran goalkeeper Puma Galvin stopped all five of the Cardinal shots on goal.
Â
The Cardinals (1-0-1 overall) are back in action on Monday, heading to Fond du Lac, Wis., for a 6 p.m. nonconference game against Marian.
