ELKHORN Wis. — The Saint Mary's University tennis teams begin their four-day spring trip on Saturday, traveling to Edgewood College for a pair of nonconference matches beginning at 2 p.m.

Last Action:
The Cardinal women have been off since Feb. 25, when SMU dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 MIAC decision to St. Olaf at the Winona Tennis Center. … The Cardinal men are coming off three straight road wins last weekend — 8-1 victories over MSOE, Concordia-Wisconsin and Carroll. … The Edgewood women are playing first match of the spring, having gone 11-4 during the fall season. … The Edgewood men dropped a 9-0 decision to UW-Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wis., last Saturday. … Today's match is the season opener for the North Central (Ill.) men's squad. … Saint Mary's (Ind.) picked up its first win of the season on Feb. 27, when the Belles dropped John Carroll 8-1. … The Adrian men's and women's teams are both coming off losses at Berry College on March 2, as the Bulldog men fell 8-1, while the Bulldog women dropped a 7-2 decision.

Last Meeting:
SMU Women vs. Edgewood — March 28, 2010: The Cardinals opened a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match, then won four of five singles matches, before rain washed out the rest of the matches, leaving SMU with a 6-1 victory in Orlando, Fla.

The Cardinal men will be making their first appearances against all three of their spring trip opponents, while Monday's match vs. Saint Mary's (Ind.) and Tuesday's vs. Adrian will be the first ever for the SMU women.

2011 Record (4-3 Overall) | 2011 Overall Statistics
The Cardinals' Feb. 25 match against St. Olaf was the home opener for the Cardinals, who play 11 of their first 12 matches away from the Winona Tennis Center. SMU's next home match is March 25 against UW-La Crosse. … Michael Lunka (Eagen, Minn.) won all three of his No. 1 singles matches last weekend vs. MSOE, Concordia-Wisconsin and Carroll in straight sets. He has now won five straight, and six of his seven singles matches. … Lunka was also perfect in doubles last weekend, teaming with Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) for three straight victories at No. 1 doubles. … Freshman Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) picked up his first collegiate win with a 6-1, 6-2 win over MSOE's Dustin Holzmer, and added two more wins — also at No. 2 singles — against Concordia-Wisconsin and Carroll to improve to 3-2 on the season. … Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.) also went 3-0 in singles play last weekend, winning twice at No. 5 and once at No. 4. … Puff is second to Lunka in singles wins with four. … Lunka-Steingraeber lead the team in doubles wins with four, while Puff-Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.) and Wolford-Steven Mino (Austin, Minn.) each have two doubles wins. … As a team, SMU is 22-20 in singles play and 11-10 in doubles.

Like the SMU men, the Cardinal women open the season on an extended road trip, playing 10 of their first 11 matches on the road. … Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) has been red hot this season. She enters today's match vs. Edgewood having won her last three No. 1 singles matches and has lost just once in her first seven matches. … All six of Edwards' singles wins have come in straight sets. … Edwards has also teamed with Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn.) to go 5-2 at No. 1 doubles — including wins in their last three straight. … Snyder enters today's match boasting a 5-2 record at No. 2 singles. … The Cardinals are 12-9 in doubles play this season, while going 20-22 in singles play.

The Eagles come into today's match vs. Saint Mary's in the midst of a two-match losing streak, having lost to Carthage 8-1 on Feb. 19 and UW-Oshkosh 9-0 on Feb. 26. … Edgewood snapped its season-opening three-match losing streak with a 5-4 win over Ripon on Feb. 19. … Three of the Eagles' five losses have been 9-0 sweeps, while the other two were decided by 8-1 decisions. … Max Divebliss has accounted for two of Edgewood's four singles wins this season, going 2-4 at No. 3. … Divebliss has also teamed with Cody Strebig to win two of the team's three doubles matches, as the duo is 2-4 at No. 2.

The Eagles are coming off their first NCAA Tournament berth and are the reigning Northern Athletics Conference champions. … Edgewood closed out its 2010 fall season with an 11-4 overall record, while going 10-1 in NAC play en route to the conference crown. … The Eagles ended their season with 10 wins in their last 11 matches, which included a season-high eight-match winning streak. … Shae Beckwith and Jessi Ditzler each enter today's match vs. SMU with 13 singles wins this season. Beckwith is 9-1 at No. 3 and 4-1 at no. 4, while Ditzler has played every singles position but No. 1 and No. 6, going 2-0 at No. 2, 3-1 at No. 3, 8-0 at No. 4 and 1-1 at No. 5. … Amber Hemp (12-2) and Ali Diamond-Tumbush (10-4) have also won 10 or more singles matches this season. … Along with her 13-2 mark in singles play, Ditzler is also perfect in doubles, teaming with Hemp to go 10-0 at No. 2. … Two of Edgewood's four losses have come on neutral courts. North Central Cardinals Men's News and Notes:

Today's match is the season opener for the Cardinals, who finished 7-15 overall a year ago. … Nineteen of North Central's 22 matches last year were played away from home. The Cardinals were 2-1 in their three home matches. … North Centrals' Sam Sweeney enters the season as the top-ranked singles player in the Central Region, while owning the No. 5 ranking nationally. … Sweeney compiled a 9-1 record in singles during the fall season, winning the ITA Central Region Championship on Sept. 24-27, before finishing third at the ITA National Small College Championships on Oct. 14-17 in Mobile, Ala. The senior was ranked 13th nationally and third within the region at the end of a 2010 season that included his second straight CCIW No. 1 singles title and an appearance at the NCAA Division III Championships, where Sweeney advanced to the second round and earned All-American accolades. … Sweeney was one of three Cardinals to record 10 or more singles wins a year ago. Sweeney finished 18-3, while Josh Clay was 14-8 and Matt Boguslawski was 12-8. … Sweeney was also 18-3 in doubles, where he teamed with Boguslawski in the Cardinals' No. 1 spot. The duo accounted for 18 of the team's 24 doubles wins a year ago.

Saint Mary's Belles Women's News and Notes:
2011 Record (1-2 Overall)
The Belles are coming off a 13-9 season in 2010 and must replace graduated senior Camille Gebert, who collected 109 career wins and was victorious in her last 29 singles matches against MIAA opponents. An All-MIAA First Team selection for the second time in her career, Gebert went undefeated at No. 2 singles in conference play for the second year in a row in 2010. … Jillian Hurley enters her senior campaign in 2011 as a three-time All-MIAA honoree. The senior was named to the Second Team as a freshman and has been an All-MIAA First Team pick the last two seasons. She is closing in on 100 career victories combined between singles and doubles play. … Saint Mary's 8-1 win over John Carroll on Feb. 27 snapped the Belles' season-opening two-match losing streak. … SMC dropped its first two matches by identical 7-2 scores.

Adrian Bulldogs Men's News and Notes:

The Bulldogs' 8-1 loss to Berry College on March 2 was its second straight to open the 2011 season. … Alex Ziajor picked up Adrian's lone win vs. Berry, posting a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles. Ziajtor's win was also the Bulldogs first of the season — Adrian was blanked 9-0 in its season opener vs. Baldwin-Wallace. … All 18 of Adrian's singles matches this season have been decided in straight sets.

Like their male counterparts, the Bulldogs enter today's match against Saint Mary's in the midst of a season-opening two-game losing streak. … Adrian opened its season with an 8-1 loss vs. Baldwin-Wallace on Feb. 19, then fell to Berry 7-2 on March 2. … Shelby Kruszewski and Shannon Woods teamed up at No. 1 doubles to record the Bullodgs' lone win against Baldwin-Wallac on Feb. 19, while Sarah Brooks tallied a three-set victory at No. 5 singles and Sarah Kean-Katelyn Simcina won at No. 3 doubles for Adrian vs. Berry College on March 2. …
