LAKEVILLE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team found itself staring at a rather deep hole after the doubles portion of Thursday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Bethel.
And no matter how hard they tried, the Cardinals just couldn't find a way to dig themselves out, as Bethel turned a 3-0 lead after the doubles competition into a 7-2 victory at the Lakeville Lifetime Fitness.
“The ladies played hard tonight,” said Halberg, whose team falls to 0-2 in the MIAC and 2-2 overall. “We got off to a bit of a slow start, and that put us in a tough, 3-0 hole. But we really battled in the singles portion, and played some great tennis.”
Deanne Webber (Reedsburg, Wis.) and
Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.) picked up SMU's singles victories, as Webber was a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) winner at No. 3, while Krull recorded a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 6.
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) opened with a 6-2 win at No 2 singles, but the SMU sophomore could not close the deal in losing a heartbreaker, 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 to BU's Lisa Scheevel.
The Cardinals now head to Orlando, Fla., where they'll square off against King's College, Berry College and Morningside College as part of their spring trip. Matches start Monday, March 4 against King's College.
