ST. PETER, Minn. — Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) and Haley Jorgenesen (Fallon Nev.) kicked off their collegiate careers in memorable fashion, as the Saint Mary's University duo picked up singles wins in their first women's tennis matches as Cardinals Friday at the Gustavus Fall Invitational.

Vandenberg opened her career with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gustavus' Kelly Johnson, while Jorgensen was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Ashley Lund of Macalester.

Unfortunately, Round 2 didn't go as smoothly, as Vandenberg fell to St. Olaf's Andrea Junes 6-4, 6-1 and Jorgensen suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback to Ariel Bloniarz of Carleton. Lindsey Almberg (Coon Rapids, Minn.) also took part in the GAC Fall Invitational, falling in both of her matches, 6-3, 6-3 to Hamline's Leeanna Manthe and 8-0 to Carroll's Alison Lambrecht.

Almberg and Jorgensen also found the going a bit rocky in doubles action, as the Cardinal duo fell to UW-Whitewater's Brooke Hendricks/Rachel Siemon 8-1 and to Wartburg's Jessie Behrer/Marissa Burresh 8-0.

While the SMU trio was taking part in the Gustavus Fall Invitational, the Cardinals' Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.) made her first appearance at the illustrious USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, also held at Gustavus' Swanson Center.

Krull, who went 10-6 in singles play during her freshman campaign at SMU a year ago, came up short in her first-round match, falling to Carroll's Abigail Pellett 6-1, 6-0, but rebounded with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hamline's Cassie Rammage in the consolation bracket and will return to the court on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Krull then teamed with Vandenberg to pick up a pair of doubles wins at the GAC Fall Invitational, as the SMU duo beat Amy Orthaus-Maddie-Schaefer of UW-Eau Claire 8-5, before dropping Hamline's Lilli Denison/Angie Suebert 8-3 to move on to Saturday's afternoon action.
