WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team steps out of conference play this weekend, hosting Edgewood (noon) and Martin Luther (5 p.m.) on Saturday and St. Scholastica (11 a.m.) on Sunday at the Winona Tennis Center.

The Cardinals got a win at No. 1 doubles from Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and McKennah Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.), but Carleton proved to be too deep, as the Knights handed SMU an 8-1 setback in Saint Mary's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener last Saturday. … Saturday's match is the first of the spring season for Edgewood, which is coming off an 11-4 performance during the fall season. … Martin Luther dropped its season-opener on Jan. 28, falling to Macalester 8-1 in a nonconference match in St. Paul, Minn. … St. Scholastica entered its busy weekend off a 6-3 season-opening loss to Concordia on Feb. 4 in Duluth, Minn.

March 21, 2006: The Cardinals won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and cruised to an 8-1 nonconference win over Martin Luther at the Winona Tennis Center.

SMU vs. St. Scholastica — Their Last Meeting:
February 6, 2011: Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.), Rebecca Snyder and Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) picked up straight-set singles wins, but it was not enough, as SMU dropped a 6-3 nonconference decision to the Saints in Duluth, Minn.

The Eagles closed out the fall portion of their schedule going 9-2 in their final 11 matches — including a run of eight-straight victories. … Five of Edgewood's 11 wins were 9-0 victories, while two of the Eagles' four losses were 9-0 shutouts. … Shae Beckwith and Laura Olsen teamed to reach the doubles final at last fall's Northern Athletics Conference Individual Tournament. The duo dropped a 9-7 decision in the championship match en route to earning All-NAC honors. … Beckwith and Kristen Boone enter the spring portion of the schedule having gone 10-5 in singles play this season. Beckwith picked up eight of her 10 singles wins at No. 2, where she is 8-1. … Taylor Storbakken and Boone have teamed for a team-best 10 doubles wins, including nine at No. 2 doubles, where they are 9-4. … In just three seasons, Edgewood coach Ben Oestreich owns a school-record 40 dual-match victories.

Leslie Klinski picked up the Knights' lone victory against Macalester in their 8-1, season-opening loss on Jan. 28, recording a straight set victory over the Scots' Gabby Queenan at No. 3 singles. … The win was the first collegiate victory for Klinski. … The Knights are coming off a 7-5 season a year ago. … Five of Martin Luther's seven wins in 2011 came on the Knights' home courts. … Missing from this year's squad is Hannah Janke, who recorded a team-best six singles wins a year ago, while Karina Luthra and Heidi Heckmann also did not return in 2012, after each posted five singles victories a year ago. … Lauren Gross and Michelle Hintz finished a team-best 8-3 in doubles play a year ago.

The Saints are coming off a 20-4 season in 2011 in which St. Scholastica was a perfect 10-0 in conference play and won the six-team Upper Midwest Athletic Conference title. … The conference tournament championship was the 15th straight for the Saints, which won all nine flights for the second consecutive year. … St. Scholastica enters the 2012 season without standouts Callee Conda and Danni Sonnenfield. Conda won her third straight UMAC singles title with a 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, (10-4) victory at No. 1 singles, while Sonnenfield closed out her career with 56 singles wins, ranking third all-time. … Three of St. Scholastica's four losses last year came to regionally ranked teams. … CSS's 6-3 season-opening loss to Concordia on Feb. 4 snapped the Saints' 13-match winning streak. … Rachael Zweiner and Alexis Gunderson collected singles wins in the Saints' season-opener against Concordia, while the doubles team of Zweiner and Cortne Solberg accounted for CSS's other win.
