• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference/nonconference doubleheader against Saint Benedict and Bethany Lutheran sitting at 4-1 overall — the lone blemish, a 9-0 loss to conference power Gustavus in their MIAC-opener.

• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals picked up a pair of impressive nonconference wins last weekend, recorded back-to-back 8-1 victories over UW-Superior and Loras at the Winona Tennis Center.

• GAINING THE UPPER HAND: After managing just two wins in their previous 22 matches dating back to 2001, the Cardinals are 4-1 in their last four contests against Saint Benedict.

• UNBEATABLE: The Cardinals head into their nonconference match against Bethany Lutheran having never lost to the Vikings, boasting an unblemished 8-0 record. All eight Cardinal wins in that span have been 9-0 sweeps.

• NEAR-PERFECT: The Cardinals have dropped just two games in their four wins this season. After opening the season with back-to-back 9-0 sweeps of Northwestern (Minn.) and Martin Luther, SMU added a pair of 8-1 victories over UW-Superior and Loras. … Saint Mary’s did not lose more than four games in any set in sweeping Northwestern on Jan. 28, while dropping just 10 total games in their 9-0 win over Martin Luther the following day.

• PERFECTION: Saint Mary’s posted three straight 8-0 doubles wins in their 9-0 victory over Martin Luther on Jan. 29.

• LEADING THE CHARGE: Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) and Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) head into Saturday’s matches leading the Cardinals with four dual-match singles wins each, followed by Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.), Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.), and Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) with three apiece. … Morgan has yet to be beaten in singles play, owning a perfect 4-0 mark. 

• RACKING UP THE WINS: Becker closed out the 2021 season winning four of her last five matches to end the year with a team-high 11 singles wins, and now owns a 24-4 career singles record.

• SINGLED OUT: The Cardinals collected nine singles victories at last fall’s ITA Regional/Midwest Open, led by Henderson, Renwick, and Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.) with two each.

• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Buerman and Renwick picked up their first collegiate singles wins for the Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team at the 2021 ITA Regional/Midwest Open on Sept. 24-25. Buerman outlasted Northwestern’s Taylar Smith 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-6 and Renwick followed suit with a marathon, 6-0, 3-6, 10-4 victory over Caroline Hutchinson of Wartburg. … The Cardinals had four athletes record their first collegiate singles wins in 2021 — Henderson, Peterson, Sarrianna Hoffer (Wausau, Wis.), and Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.).

• DOUBLING UP: Morgan/Peterson and Henderson/Dosser share the team lead in dual-match doubles wins with four — both teams a perfect 4-0 — followed by Frye/Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) and Becker/Frye with two each. … Frye and Morgan teamed up to go 3-1 in doubles play at last fall’s ITA Regional/Midwest Open.

• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals have played all five of their matches this season on their home court. SMU has picked up eight of its last nine wins at the Winona Tennis Center.

• DOMINANCE: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 29, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 16. SMU is 17-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last eight meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts.

• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: With their wins over UW-Superior and Loras on Feb. 11-12, the Cardinals improved to 70-20 against nonconference opponents since 2012.

• FOR THE RECORD: The Bennies enter Saturday’s road matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 5-2 overall, including a 1-0 mark in conference action.

• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Benedict kicked off conference play on a winning note last Saturday, cruising to an 8-1 MIAC win over Concordia in Sartell, Minn. CSB swept three of the six singles matches in straight sets, while getting three-set victories at No. 6 en route to its conference-opening victory

• HOME COOKING: Saint Benedict has played four of its first seven matches on its home court, going a perfect 4-0. CSB is 1-0 on the road and 0-2 in neutral-site matches.

• ROLLING ALONG: After opening the season with a 5-4 loss to NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State, CSB rattled off four straight wins, before dropping a 5-2 decision to Upper Iowa — another NCAA Division II institution. 

• SINGLED OUT: Greta Nesbit heads into Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s leading the team with six singles wins — including victories in each of CSB’s last five matches. Jane Bodensteiner and Ashley Tarrolly a second to Nesbit with five singles victories, followed by Lily Fredericks with four, and Peyton Kopel and Grace Lee with three each. … Tarrolly is the only Bennie to have played all seven matches at the same position this season, going 5-2 at No. 1.

• DOUBLING UP: The doubles team Tarrolly/Fredericks owns the team lead with four wins in six matches paired together, followed by Bodensteiner/Maria Bedford with three. Kopel-Soophia Jonas and Nesbit/Bedford have teamed for two wins. … All told, Bedford, Tarrolly, and Bodensteiner have all won five doubles matches, one more than Fredericks and Kopel.

• AS A TEAM: The Bennies own a pair of 7-2 victories this season, as well as one 6-3 win and two 8-1 triumphs. … Saint Benedict is 29-13 in singles play, while going 14-7 in doubles. … The Bennies have had four different players compete at No. 5 and No. 6 singles through seven matches.

• FOR THE RECORD: Saturday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the season-opener for the Vikings, ,who are coming off a 2-6 showing in 2021, including a 1-4 mark in UMAC action.

• LAST TIME OUT: Bethany Lutheran has not play since May 1, when they dropped an 8-1 decision to UW-Superior in the UMAC Tournament.

• BIG FINISH: After opening the season with five consecutive losses — including the first four all by 9-0 decisions — BLC closed out the 2021 season winning two of their last three.

• SINGLED OUT: Karena Verbitsky closed out the 2021 season with a team-leading three singles wins. After opening the season 0-4, Verbitsky rattled off three consecutive wins. Kaitlyn Berreau, Shoshana, and Emma Newton all closed out the year tied for second on the team with two singles wins each. … Bruner and Newton are the only Vikings to play all eight matches in 2021 at the same position — Bruner went 2-6 at No. 1 and Newton was 2-6 at No. 2.

• DOUBLING UP: Berneau and Emma Carmichael teamed to account for three of BLC’s six doubles victories a year ago, finishing 3-1. … Bruner and Newton chipped in two doubles victories, while Verbitsky/Lauren Zimmerman notched the other.

• AS A TEAM: Bethany Lutheran finished 12-36 in singles play in 2021, going 3-5 at No. 5, 2-6 at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6, and 1-7 at No. 4. … The Vikings finished the year 6-18 in doubles competition, going 3-5 at No. 2. … Bethany Lutheran used seven doubles combinations a year ago, with Bruner/Newton the only team to play all eight matches in the same spot (No. 1). BLC used three different pairs at No. 2 and two at No. 3.
