Borndale proved to be an ironman for the Cardinal baseball team, playing in 125 of a possible 126 games during his four-year collegiate career. Borndale, a career .338 hitter, enjoyed his best year in 1985, when he hit .408 and launched a school-record 14 home runs en route to First-Team All-MIAC and First-Team All-Midwest Region honors. He set single-season school records for slugging percentage (.990) and total bases (97), while his 25 walks and 38 runs scored during that senior season ranked second and third all-time, respectively.

Borndale closed out his Cardinal career ranked No. 1 in home runs (23), second in walks (61) and among the top 10 in slugging percentage (.656), total bases (200), on-base percentage (.439), RBIs (73) and runs scored (82).
